Our clothing is a protective shield, but machine crafted knitwear is like a second skin. With the Winter still in fine form here in Melbourne I thought it was time for something different, time to review a costume exhibition.

Above are drawings I made from the exciting RMIT Gallery exhibition The Endless Garment. I made these drawings back in 2010, while the show was still on display at the university. But it was high summer then, and far to hot to speak of woollen coverings.

Highlighting the works of Issey Miyake, Sandra Backlund, Walter Van Beirendonck, Cooperative Designs, Mark Fast, Yoshiki Hishinuma, Saverio Palatella, Freddie Robins, Sibling and Nikki Gabriel, the exhibition wove the history of digitial fabric production with a bizaare collection of garments. Whimsical masks, hoods, capes and caftans spoke of all the fantastical potential of humble wool.

Beirendonck's sweaters seemed to morph on the body like mutant creaters, seeing a winter beanie grow into a full size burka. Sandra Backlund's too formed black alien prosthetics around the body. Saverio Palatella's cape-like gown glowed with fine detail through the digital weave, while Nikki Gabriel's beautiful earthy pieces seemed to fall apart to reveal the lacy qualities of the fabric.

There’s clatter from the restaurant below as we make our way up the stairs to Mr Ben Mitchell’s door. He resides above a small Asian restaurant down an alleyway that makes me feel like I’m in The Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles.

Inside, a large Prada bag acts like a makeshift lampshade in the lounge room. It sets the tone for his extensive collection.

The apartment is lined with dramatic pieces full of restrained grace. Calvin Klein and Givenchy don one wall, Rick Owens platform shoes find a place on the floor with a pair of Prada brogues, and of course there are fashion magazines everywhere.

Ben made black coffee and I drew him whilst Tom Kalin's Savage Grace played in the background. In these drawings, Ben wears several pieces from Miuccia Prada’s Spring/Summer Collection 2011. The pieces seemed to draw themselves and despite being designed for summer they fit perfectly for winter here in Melbourne.

Hot Air Balloon off around the world...Paintings for a nursery, Collingwood

If you are up early enough in Melbourne you can sometimes see hot air balloons sailing overhead. I usually see them if I'm in the mood for a morning run. No matter what state of mind you're in, the balloons never fail to be, literally uplifting or even a little magical.

So recently when I was commissioned to create paintings for the nursery of a pair of twin baby girls, I knew exactly what to imagine. The balloon in these drawings doesn't simply glide over Melbourne, it takes off all over the place, here is a peek.
